PLEASE SIGN! Campaign to slow down speeding cars on Woolstone/Cranston/Houston Road

We live on the corner of this nightmare junction in SE23, cars driving too fast resulting in weekly accidents one of which totally writing off our parked car, closely missing pedestrians and decimating our front garden and our next door neighbours…You may have used the junction in your car (to get to Sainsburies?) or tried to cross during busy times, it’s crazy and dangerous especially at peak times and for children…Please sign the petition to make it safer for all of us, and share with anyone else who lives in the area, Thank-you please!

I think there was something wrong with your link - I’ve taken the liberty of correcting the URL

EDIT: and signed it while I was there - it is a dangerous junction, I agree, though not sure what they could do. A bit small for a roundabout and lights would be a nightmare

If this was Canada, it would be a “Four-way STOP sign” junction where they all have to stop and take turns to go

It is indeed a nightmare of a junction, especially on foot or a push bike. However, like @thirstforwine I too am unsure of what could actually be done to address the situation.

Good luck all the same.

Something like this could be implemented along Woolstone - apparently reduces accidents by 29%

That might help with average speed but it would delay the buses that run along there I’m sure, plus doesn’t address the awkward junction

Agreed, terrible road. Wish we had the same in Waldenshaw Road, not only is it a rat run but people seem keen to go as fast as they can to beat the lights. It is a 20mph zone.

Thanks! They could try putting in another speed bump in on Woolstone a shorter distance from the junction, cars tend to go over the bump just by Kilmorie road and speed up around the corner which is usually the reason for accidents, by the time they come around the bend a car has already pulled out of Cranston and this results in a collision shunting the car crossing the junction to mount the pavement and potentially crash into whoever is passing or any parked car, I’ve seen the same accident happen many times, have had to break up fights between drivers and have also watched pedestrians leap out of the way of cars careering towards them… They could also reduce the speed limit to 20 miles an hour and put in speed cameras? I agree they can’t block off Houston Road as some have suggested, traffic implications would be too great. It’s only a matter of time before someone not so agile gets run over by a car, actually about 7 years ago a small child was run over and killed on Woolstone road just before the junction …My husband was with a group of men trying to get him out from under the car )-:

Thanks for your messages guys, if we get the signatures of the petition then something will have to be done, what I don’t know but something!!

I think it would help @thirstforwine - if cars were forced to only go one way, then during that time the intersection would be less busy. It would delay the busses - sure, the question is whether that delay would be worth reducing overall speeds/accidents. However if there was another, better way of reducing speed then I’d certainly support that.

Also I would like to add, that I dont believe that speed bumps/cushions or whatever are useful at all. Especially cushions - cars swerve towards you if you’re cycling to avoid these.

My preference would be speed-activated signage like this. Works on me:

Much prefer this to bumps / chicanes etc - which lead my eyes to focus on the road surface rather than the cars and pedestrians I should be looking out for.

Another call for Community Speed checks maybe?

That would be a good solution.

I’d be up for this!

It’s work in progress, but threads like this really help with identifying the hot spots that need tackling. So thank you for sharing.
Hopefully we will see some movement in this and can get started making a real difference.
