Loft conversion - any recommendations?

We went with Outlook Lofts and were extremely happy with the team. Four years later and the finish is still great. We have two sets of friends that followed suit and all have similar positive views. Highly recommended.

Hi Jerry,

Thank you for your your speedy response and your feedback very much appreciated.

Many thanks!

We’re undergoing one at the moment, using Rad at LondonWide Construction. We’ve used him before to completely renovate inside and to do major landscaping in the garden as well (and he’s been used several times by neighbours down the years, and by friends in Forest Hill). So far so good - I would certainly give him a call.

We also got quotes from Benchmarx and Taylored. They all seem to be much of a muchness on price but Rad is a known quantity - honest and conscientious. Would have been happy using either of the others as heard good things, but Taylored have something like 70-80 labourers in SE23 so you have to query the consistency and level of oversight; and I think Benchmarx are similar. Whereas with Rad there’s no project manager in an office running vast teams - he’s running the job himself and so far (we’re about 2-3 weeks in) he’s been on site every day doing the work.

From my personal experience, I would not recommend Taylored Lofts (or Taylored Building, or Taylored Building London, or whatever they are called this week).
I am not going to post images of the damage they have done to my house as it is very upsetting but happy to share by DM with anyone who is interested.
We are starting legal actions against them.
Sorry for being negative but it would be wrong not to warn people.

I wish I had found this before agreeing for Taylored to refurbish my home, it’s been an awful experience. The Project Manager never come into the house to check the quality of work, he never discuses anything with me, he never writes anything down (so how does he know what I want?) and as a result had skirting installed I didn’t approve or ask for along with other decisions being made about my home without consultation. When complaining you just get excuses ā€˜well, it’s in keeping with the character of the property’ I was told when complaining about the skirting, that was from James Taylor himself followed by the ā€˜I’ve been in the business 35 years, know what I’m doing’ speech. I cannot in good conscience recommend Taylored Lofts to anyone, you will not get what you want and paid for.

We’re on week 15 of what should have been a 12 week build with Econoloft. It’s been hideously stressful, I have no idea when they will ever actually finish, the house has been like a bomb site for months & I would definitely not recommend.

My job was a 6 - 8 week job, started in Jan and still going! nearly 4 months later, full skip outside for 2 months, scaffolding that’s not been used for 3 months, no one there seems to give a you know what! I’ve actually been thinking this week about talking to a solicitor about it all, my patience has run out. A small claims court case should do it I think.

Plus Rooms were fabulous with our kitchen extension, they do lofts too. Came in on time, on budget. Excellent communication with Project Manager right the way through, on site for weekly meeting then additional as required. Superb pre-commencement meeting so we understood exactly what to expect, cleaned up daily.

Please don’t think I’m gloating, we had and utter utter nightmare with the company we used for the loft conversion that took nearly a year to get signed off with building control. So when we decided to do the kitchen we paid a little bit more but was definitely worth it in the end

Hi Dan ,we are thinking about going with Taylor lofts. Would be great to get some feed back from people that have used them .Many thanks Lynn

Hello,

Has anyone got a recent recommendation/ had a good experience with loft converter? I contacted plus rooms, they only do loft if you are having ground floor extension. Have also just reached out to Rad at LondonWide but anymore recos would be appreciated! Thanks

We’re about to have ours started on by http://www.selcombuildingservices.co.uk/
A local company (office based on Brockley rise), that seems fairly well established. They pretty much have an outright monopoly on loft extensions in our part of Honor Oak Park, so hope that’s a good sign.

Haven’t seen them mentioned anywhere on this thread. I did try to contact benchmark lofts, based on the previous recommendations here, but they were too busy.

I’ll report back on how things went with Selcom.

Thanls Leon, I’d be interested to hear about your experience with Selcom.
Would anyone who has had their conversion done in the past 12 months be able to advise of a ball park cost please? Don’t want to start contacting companies if we’re way off the mark with what we have saved. Looking to have a single room with ensuite put into our roof. Bathroom done & fitted (appreciate shower, loo etc will be additional). Room plastered & painted. Looking for dorm with large opening window.
TIA X

Just going through a loft extension with Taylored Lofts. The experience depends on the team / gang which does the work. The first team was not brilliant but OK. The second one so far looks great. Good thing about Taylored is that they have a very responsive customer team and respond to issues / compliants immediately.
Costs have risen significantly. For a loft extension on a semi-detached house we were quoted Ā£50k back in April, however, by the time we have signed the contract in August they have risen to Ā£70k! Don’t want to think what they are now.

Thank you for sharing this info. Would be keen to know your experience of Taylored when your loft is finished. Good luck!

We are using Elite Construction who our architects recommended. We are having a total nightmare, we were supposed to be finished in August and still going. I wouldnt recommend these cowboys at all.

Oh no, I am sorry to hear thay but thank you for sharing. I will avoid! I hope you manage to get your project finished soon to a standard you are happy with.
Based on what I have read here I’ll be lookong to quotes most definitely from Benchmark and then a selection of the following, but understanding a couple of bad experiences have been had with Classic and Taylored…
JA Lofts, Detailed developments, Taylored, Classic lofts, Visionary, Outlook & Londonwide, Selcom.

Hi @leonk hope you are well. If your loft conversion finished? Were you happy with the job done by Selcom?
Thank you

Still ongoing with our loft extension. There have been a few delays, mainly the staircase, (but this was built by an external company so not really Selcom’s fault).

They’ve been good so far, but there’s still the ā€œfinishingā€ part to go.

Hi all,

We’re just coming to the end of a loft conversion with CS Lofts (https://www.cs-lofts.co.uk/) and couldn’t recommend enough. They’ve come in on time, been really respectful of our home and have made sure we’re up to speed on what’s happening all the time. They’re also just really lovely guys.

Hi Vicky,

Did you go ahead with visionary lofts? If so how was your experience? I have a quote from them which looks very attractive.

Thanks
